Georgia, affectionately dubbed the Peach State, was the southernmost of the original 13 U.S. Colonies. Known widely for its natural beauty and plantation style ranches, the state of Georgia conjures images of a bucolic majesty as well as devastating conflict that is central to the American Identity. Its capital of Atlanta is a functional hub of the Southeastern United States, serving as the home base for such businesses and government operations as the Centre for Disease Control, CNN, and the Coca-Cola bottling facility. The state is also a major player in the sporting community: three major-league sports franchises call Atlanta Home: the NFL’s Falcons, the MLB’s Braves, and the NBA’s Hawks. Augusta, Georgia is also home to the annual Masters Golf Tournament, one of the highlights of the PGA Tour season.
It is no surprise that a state blessed by such natural splendor has embraced the tradition of the slate roof. North Country Slate has been supplying Georgia homes and businesses with the perfect roofing material to match the state’s imperial majesty for more than two decades.

Slate Projects in Georgia
For more than 1000 years, people have been using slate to protect their homes and businesses from the harshest weather and climate conditions on the globe. While the earliest slate roofs have been historically traced to Northern Scotland, slate shingles have long been regarded as the gold standard of roofing materials the world over. While technology has greatly improved since the adoption of slate shingles, the principles of slate extraction remain largely the same as the hammer and chisel method perfected over the centuries. This simplicity contributes to slate shingles being one of the most environmentally friendly roofing materials available today.
Some of the more exciting projects North Country Slate has contributed to in Georgia include:
- St. John the Baptist Cathedral in Savannah, GA (Unfading Black Slate Roof Tiles)
- Georgia Tech University in Atlanta, GA (Unfading Green Slate Roof Tiles)
- The Cheenocetah Lookout Tower in Cornelia, GA (Multicolor Blend – Gray, Green, and Purple)
In addition to churches and government buildings, North Country Slate has provided roofing slate and design consultation to several private homes and businesses across the state.

FAQ
Depending on the thickness of the slate, a slate roof will usually weigh between 700 and 1400 pounds per 100 square feet, although thicker specialty slates will produce a greater weight. The most common slate thicknesses, from ¼-3/8” will usually weigh approximately 1170 lbs per 100 square feet.
The cost of a slate roof will also vary depending on the slate chosen, given the slate’s working characteristics and availability. Our Semi-Weathering Gray Green slate tile is widely available, supremely workable and affordable, while our Unfading Red slate tile is much more scarcely available, brittle to handle and more expensive. Most roofing slate will cost between $600 and $800 per 100 square feet.
Slate roofs are absolutely repairable! While slate damage is rare, shingles are occasionally broken by fallen tree limbs or flying debris during windstorms. Experienced roofers are well qualified to replace slates broken by incidental damage. Roof replacement is only recommended after catastrophic damage to approximately 30 % of the roof.
