The weight of a slate roof will depend on the size of the roof and the thickness of the slate selected. Most ¼-3/8” slates will weigh between 935 and 1,170 lbs per 100 square feet.
While the total cost of a slate roof will vary depending on the size of the roof, most of our stand ¼-3/8” slate tiles will cost between $600-$800 USD depending on the thickness. The cost of slate is determined by the slate’s working characteristics and its relative scarcity. For example, our Unfading Red roofing slate is more challenging to quarry and therefore more expensive, while our Semi-Weathering Gray-Green roofing slate is much more readily available and has great trimming characteristics that make it a more affordable option.
In instances where windborne debris or acts of nature have damaged individual slate tiles on a roof, these tiles are easily replaced by a qualified slate roof contractor. You can find our guide to replacing broken slate roofing tiles here. A general rule of thumb is that total replacement need only be considered if 20-30% of the slate roof tiles are catastrophically compromised.
