Vermont Slate Colors

Whether you’re building a new home or replacing an old Vermont slate roof, our experienced staff will source high quality Vermont slate. We work closely with architects, roofing contractors and owners of government, religious and institutional buildings to assist them in the preservation of historic structures. Vermont slate was formed 450-650 million years ago. The slate belt covers 300 square miles and covers part of Vermont and New York (Fair Haven, VT, West Pawlet, VT and Middle Granville, NY). Quarries in this area have been producing high quality slate since 1843. These slate producers have a wealth of experience in quarrying, classification and packaging with a commitment to producing roofing slate that meets or exceeds the requirement of an ASTM S-1 rated roofing slate with service life in excess of 100 years.

Premium Vermont Slate colors are virtually maintenance free, durable, long lasting, fireproof, unaffected by freeze/thaw cycles, resistant to hail and proven performance on rooftops.

Vermont slate comes in a wide variety of colors such as; Semi-Weathering Gray/Black (Vermont Black), Semi-Weathering Mottled Gray/Black (Strata Gray), Semi-Weathering (Vermont Gray), Unfading Gray, Unfading Purple, Semi-Weathering Purple, Unfading Mottled Purple and Green, Unfading Green and Semi-Weathering (Sea) Green.
A custom blend of these Vermont slate colors can be supplied to create a truly unique roof. By blending semi-weathering and unfading slate colors it helps to soften the transition from color to color on the roof. In addition to numerous standard sizes available, Vermont slate thickness can be ordered as “Quarters” (1/4” – 3/8”), “Heavies” (3/8” – ½”) and “Extra Heavies (1/12” – ¾”).

Our most recent Vermont slate project we supplied 250 squares of our North Country Semi-Weathering Green slate for Penn State University’s Atherton Hall re-roof. This slate is a premium quality roofing slate and a percentage of these slates will weather to tones of brown or buff over time. This slate provides moderate color and texture variations while maintaining a primary background color of green. They are frequently used as a base color in multi-colored slate roofs. Produced by select Vermont quarries this slate will provide Atherton Hall with a service life of 100 years.

Sheena Owen began working for North Country Slate on October 12, 1999. Started as the Sales Coordinator and transitioned to a Sales Representative. Daily duties include providing customer service, new business development, inside sales, handling all cross-border customs issues/documentation, arranging shipments, health and safety representation and social media marketing. Sheena graduated from the University of Guelph in 1992 with a BA in English and Drama and in 1995 graduated with a Diploma in Radio and Television Broadcasting from Centennial College. Sheena’s first job was the Executive Producer’s Assistant for TV shows including Robocop, F/X The Series and Nikita. She went on to becoming an Assistant Manager at Eddie Bauer. In her spare time, Sheena enjoys traveling, gardening and hikes with family and friends.
