North Country Slate, formerly Newfoundland Slate Inc. (NSI) began producing and supplying roofing slates in 1990. Quarried in Burgoyne’s Cove, Newfoundland, Canada, the slate from this area was first produced in 1850. NSI produced an Unfading Purple (Trinity Heather and Trinity Plum Red) and Unfading Green (Trinity Green). In 1998, slate production at NSI ceased and the owner, John Carrick Sr., President of McAsphalt Industries, created a new roofing slate supplier division and named it North Country Slate.
In 1997, Glendyne Quarries Inc, a young quarry in St. Marc Du Lac Long, Quebec, started up producing a high quality unfading black slate. By September 1997, North Country Slate was appointed exclusive distributor for Glendyne products throughout North America. These blue/black slates have a consistent shade, hold their original color and are smooth textured. This partnership allowed Glendyne to grow and become one of North America’s largest, most efficient and high quality roofing slate producer. In February 2007, Glendyne purchased North Country Slate and in 2011, long time North Country Slate President Dave Large, purchased the company.
North Country Unfading Black roofing slate is available in nominal 3/16”, ¼” and 3/8” smooth texture and ¼” thickness in Medium Texture. These slates are produced “on grain”, holes are the preferred “punched” type (not drilled) and most sizes are usually available for shipment from our large inventories. Breakage at time of delivery is virtually zero and customers frequently comment on how nice the slate cuts during installation. Unlike many imported black slates, North Country Unfading Black contains no inclusions of oxidizable iron pyrite, which can cause unsightly staining on rooftops. This slate has been favorably compared, by industry professionals, to the best natural roofing slates ever produced in North America.
In addition to supplying the unfading black slates, North Country Slate has built solid relationships with producers in the slate valley of Vermont and New York distributing their colored slate products. We offer a full range of high quality natural roofing slates in all sizes, colors and textures. These slates include, Semi-Weathering Gray/Black (Vermont Black), Semi-Weathering Mottled Gray/Black (Strata Gray), Semi-Weathering (Vermont) Gray, Unfading Gray, Unfading Purple, Semi-Weathering Purple, Unfading Mottled Purple and Green, Unfading Green and Semi-Weathering (Sea) Green. Priding ourselves on only selling the best slate available, these premium quality roofing slates meet or exceed the requirements of ASTM standards as an S-1 rated roofing slate and have a proven lifespan over 100 years.
